Ok, because I am not sure if I can get all birds into cages easily for taking outdoors, I thought if it's possible to turn my deck into.... kind of aviary. Not a real one but for some outdoor time. I have a sliding door in the living room; if you open it, you are on the wooden deck. There is no roof above the deck. I was thinking to maybe add some poles and spread some kind of net (?) to cover the volume of the deck (basically to form a roof and walls). It has to be bird proof and probably weather proof. I don't plan to leave them there for a long time and I would supervise them.
What do people normally use to cover aviaries? Chicken wire? I don't see a good possibility to use chicken wire in this setup.
My idea can totally fail. I was just thinking. Oh, the deck is not large. About 3m by 3.5 m.

Sounds a good idea to me...
Not sure what meshing you would
use... would the birds still be in there
cages or flying lose in the area?
Im sure your idea is right, but with a bit
of tweaking... look forward to what you do...

they would be cage free. This is a whole idea - to just open a door for them to get outside. If I could get them into cages (see my thread in Training), I wouldn't even bother. Of course I would need to provide some stuff on the deck for them to perch on and be occupied. But this is an easy part.
Right now this idea is still more like utopia.

My first thought is that it sounds awesome! Then I thought it through and realized that you may find yourself in a situation where it could be nearly impossible to get all of them back inside if they panicked or decided they liked it there more than inside or whatever. The sliding glass door is too big, so even if you used the grab and put inside then shut the door again method, it's too easy for them to fly back out of the door. I guess you could put a cage out there and then herd/grab them all and put them in the cage and then bring them back inside, but then you're back to your original situation of that being a colossal amount of time.

It sounds like a great idea and in my mind, I'm thinking more of like sunshade type material from Home Depot instead of chicken wire but I don't know if the birds would be able to chew through that.

You know, maybe it would be best to look up how to build an aviary and then modify those plans for your deck?

Trillie always LOVED being outside. Chipper was OK and so is Cuddles.

I for some reasons (knowing my birds) don't think that getting them back in would be a big problem. Or maybe it would, who knows

Look up do it yourself outdoor aviaries online and see what materials they use and whatnot and see if you can come up with some plans to modify it for your deck. It could be really cool!

thanks,
If I keep sliding door open for a long time, bug would fly in when it's warmer.

Everybody welcome to give an advise in Training section.

Sounds like a great idea. This summer I am going to have the area where I sit to watch the grandkids in the pool under a trellis fixed into some kind of an aviary for Peach. It will have a roof and we can add screen across that. Then I just need to come up with an idea for the sides.

Half-inch size hardware cloth is a good option for cockatiels. It's usually made of galvanized wire meaning zinc coated (which isn't good), so you'll need to scrub it with vinegar to reduce the zinc. B's aviary is made with hardware cloth and so is mine. I stapled the wire to wood supports.

Oh wow, I'd love to see more pics of your aviary, Carolyn! Is it all under your porch or is some of it uncovered? Yours and B's aviaries are so cool. I like that they both look so easily cleaned, like you just basically round up the birds and then hose it down, something like that, right?
