Both males and females will have an orange-red check patch unless they are a whiteface which will be replaced with a little white if female, or will only have a white face mask if male.

It really depends on the mutation. Hen pieds could have a bright red cheek patch and still be female. But most of the time, hens have a slightly duller spot.
