You know how Beck is untamed, but I have opened the cage door for a month and he hasn't come out once. Nothing brings him out anymore. His star toy, millet, taking food away for an hour then keeping it outside, mirrors, having the other birds out. Nothing. I'm worried for his well being. Poppy comes out 75% of the time. Beck comes out 0%. And since he knocked out all his flights from his night fright, they have grown back and he won't come out and fly. I just don't think Beck will be tamed simply because he doesn't want to. And I'm okay that. Poppy is getting comfortable with people now. He will dance for us since he likes the attention. Beck hides in his cage.

Is it bad I'm thinking of finding Beck an aviary home? I know some of you have untamed birds, you know, like Cloudia, Elvis and Azazel, and Sesamo. But you have bird rooms or aviaries, or both. I don't have that. I like that little guy, but I feel like he isn't living like he wants to. I've had him since I was in 8th grade, but I was thinking he might be happier with a budgie flock, in an aviary or in a bird room.

Please try not to judge, I really love the little guy, but I don't think he's happy.

Oh. I can totally synthesize with you. I had the same exact thought with Cloudia. I felt like she belongs in an aviary with no socializing because I spend time in my aviary and I felt bad because every time I walk in, she panics and flys everywhere. She still does. I felt bad because I don't want to put her through anxiety I actually asked my father to drive me to give her away and he made me feel better about her staying here because he said that she is so lucky to have you and that she will hate the flea market. He also told me that she doesn't understand that she doesn't have to be afraid.

Also, people on this forum don't judge. We are all here for each other. I have been on forums that judge people a lot. I hated that. That is why I am on this forum. People are amazing here and we have the best admin in the world. I don't think any person in the world can top our admin.

Sometimes a rehome can be a good solution for the bird and the owner.

I rehomed one of my budgies, Snowy, and I felt a bit bad about doing it. But, he's happy where he is and the chemistry among my flock is much better.

I'm seriously thinking about it. He and Poppy have a flock bond, so they aren't necessarily buddies, but they get along. No preening, no sharing, but they keep each other company.

I feel like he would be happier with room to fly, a larger flock and little to no interaction. I can talk to him, but he'll still hop away, while Poppy now jumps to the front to touch my lips. I love him, and have worked with him since the day I got him, but I can tell, he would just prefer to be. I won't force it on him. He still loves the cockatiels, and I think a bigger flock would do him alright. I think he would like it, instead of being in his Petco flight cage for a month. I almost feel selfish keeping him.

You need to do what you think is best of course, but it might simply be that he's become nervous about something and just needs to be reminded that the world outside the cage is safe. Do you think the change in his behavior might be related to the fact that he was sick earlier in the year?

No I do not. He was always slightly hesitant to come out. Even when he was a solo bird. He was like that before he got sick. Years before that.

I just don't know. Deep down, I want to... for his sake, but I've had him for a long time, although that means nothing unless he is happy.

B and Jaid have each other, and now Poppy is starting to trust us. Beck has his cage. That's what makes me sad.

It's possible that he might be happier in an aviary situation, and it's also possible that he won't adjust to a new situation any better than he has to the current situation. So if you do want to explore the possibility of rehoming him, it would be best to do it on a basis where the new owner agrees to return him if he isn't happy there.

Another thing to consider is that he's probably carrying AGY and you'd need to disclose that to potential new owners. A lot of them will probably run in the other direction when they hear that, so it might not be easy to find a new home with a big flock and a responsible owner. If the person who sold you Poppy would want him, that might work - that flock apparently has AGY in it already.

That's a really good idea. Maybe I'll think about that.

I'm keeping him. Sorry I went off on that. It's just sometimes I doubt my care. He came out today!

Really?! That's awesome! Congrats. It's so weird how they decide to start getting tame when we loose hope. A similar situation happened to Dianne's Emma. Cheeky birds. I forgot to tell you that Cloudia came out of her cage once. It was very shocking how she was brave. Cloudia came down to the aviary floor today and starting to chew things on the floor as well as my other birds. That was a shocker.
