Start with hand on bottom of the cage and see how they react before you do anything else.

Babysteps! And you can always start from the beginning!

Well, if it pleases thee, I will say I went and bought another clicker, as I have no idea what black hole my other 2 fell into, and I have their training diet all set up, so when I get back, I have a plan to jump into.

So formal I'm blushing!

I was doing clicker training with Piper when I first got him. Also, Snowy. I had both of them coming on my finger and turning a ferris wheel.

The first clicker I got from the pet store. I felt it was too loud. So, I got one online from a bird training site, which was much quieter.

I think you will have success with the clicker.

You can also make a click sound with your mouth if you want to. That's what I do, it's a lot less trouble than trying to juggle a clicker and the treat and whatever else I happen to be working with.

Any reason why you just can't say 'Good Boy/Girl/Bird/what-have-you' instead of using a clicker or click sound?

A short, easily distinct sound is better, because it is a unique sound. If you're anything like me, you talk to your birds a lot, and I don't think they could recognize certain words as a praise.

You can use words if you want to, but it's nice to have a distinctive sound for training - it alerts the bird that it has just earned a reward. We humans like to talk to our birds so we're likely to say something like "good boy" when we're not having a formal training session and don't have a reward available to deliver within the next two seconds. We aren't likely to make the special clicking sound when we're just casually talking to our bird, so we don't raise our bird's hopes that a treat is on the way.

You can also use a pen as a clicker if you would like.
