I swear I take him to the vet every 3 months or so. This time it was a beak injury, last time it was a wound on his wingtip that wouldn't close, before that it was a crash landing that severely bruised his shoulder...I kind of feel like telling the vet, "You know it's just him, right? He's so clumsy. I have other birds who've never had an accident. I do kind of know what I'm doing, I swear."

BTW Susanne suggests using this on the beak wound: http://oi62.tinypic.com/2ik33va.jpg The mainstream medical community is skeptical about this product. I haven't looked into it but I usually agree with their reasoning, so use your own judgment. http://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-livin ... q-20058061

I'm going to leave it for now; he's acting happy and pain-free, and the vet said to leave it to heal. I'm not sure where the wound goes and I don't want to risk anything.

If you decide later on that an anti-bacterial agent is needed, I think I would choose something like Neosporin over the colloidal silver. The claim that colloidal silver distinguishes between good and bad bacteria sets off my alarm bells, without doing a lick of real research about it.

Ive seen a damaged beak like that many years ago, it happened by a rough piece in the cage. The bird in question was a tiel, and he had some how fallen onto the piece of cage sticking out....
his beak looked just like your posted picture...
Just keep it very clean and it should heal in time... that was the advise given by the vet then, the birds beak did heal, and he lived for many years after....
Birds can get some strange things wrong with them...
Is there a rough piece in his cage? Or where he plays?

So, we've now got a working theory of what happened: the birds have a perch like this in their cage, and one of the quick links came open. I've noticed these perches have a different sort of quick link that seems really loose, like it doesn't screw tightly. Not sure if it fell open or a bird managed to unscrew it. Either way, the shape of the little metal piece you screw on to close the link matches pretty much exactly the U shape of the wound on his beak.

I'll get some pictures later today to show what's going on. The whole thing has scabbed over now. I called the vet to make sure that's expected and am waiting to hear back, as she told me to call if anything changed.

Denali's also been put back with the other two, which is good because he was getting really snippy about having to be in the little hospital cage.

It's nice that you could figure out what happened! If you want to replace the link, they're easily available online. A big hardware store might have them in stock.

The whole thing oozed for a while and scabbed over. According to the vet, this is what we want and it's a sign everything is healing.

It certainly looks weird right now. Is it expected to go back to normal eventually or will he have a scar of some kind?

We're not sure. According to the vet there will definitely be a hole as the beak grows out. If it's big, we have the option of using dental something-or-other to fill the hole. He may or may not have a permanent deformity to the beak--the vet didn't seem to think he would, but there's a possibility. It's kind of like if you slam your fingernail really badly--sometimes the nail grows back fine, sometimes there's a permanent ridge.
