Thank you for allowing me to join your forum.

I have two male cats, one 19 and one 15 (rescue). I also have a yellow male budgie (rescued from being attacked in a park) He has an ankle ring born 2014. He's also a show budgie.

On March 6 2017 we purchased a hen also 2014 and quarantined her for 30 days. She has been with our cock for six weeks and they fell in love. Sadly two days ago she died suddenly and we are devastated. She showed no sign of illness and has been taken care of very well. I am so sad.

My initial reason for joining this forum is to seek help regarding this sudden death and hear experiences of others.

Welcome to the group! I'm sorry that it was under such sad circumstances though.

It's not possible for us to figure out what happened, but we can make some guesses. Was she an English budgie or the American-style bird that's closer to the wildtype? The English budgies have had their genes tampered with pretty heavily, so in general they have a significantly shorter lifespan than the wildtype birds, and they're more prone to having internal defects that can suddenly cut their lives short.

Was she a show bird? That can make a difference too. Show birds can be more inbred than non-show birds if the breeder uses closely related birds trying to get the 'perfect' look that will win awards. Fortunately not all show breeders do this, although there are definitely some that do. Inbreeding can help birds look gorgeous on the outside, but it's not exactly good for their long-term health.

Sorry to hear about your budgie....
I've 2, one was found in the wild.... and I purchased
another to keep him company.....
I also have a tiel and 2 Parrotlets.....
Maybe have another bird to keep your budgie
company when the time feels right.... a baby tiel.....
mine lives with the budgies and loves them....

Thank you for your response. I purchased my deceased budgie from a reputable pet store. They know the breeder, also reputable. I will introduce a new hen in another six weeks or so and pray for a happier outcome.

I honestly can't believe how traumatized I feel. Her mate seems to be lost too.

I've lost young birds too for no apparent reason. Sometimes there's a hidden problem that we couldn't have guessed was there, and it's a terrible shock when the bird suddenly dies. It's hard to deal with it, but in time you and her mate will feel better. I hope that the new bird that you're planning to get will be a wonderful new addition to the flock.
