The
Jarrells of Floyd County, Kentucky
Jarrell Family
Tree |
The earliest known Jarrell in
North America was a Thomas Jarrell who arrived in Virginia as an
indentured servant sometime before 1658. But we don't know whether
the Jarrells of Floyd County, Kentucky descend from him; the line
can be confidently traced back to William Jarrell and his wife
Susannah Parks, who moved from North Carolina to Floyd County around
1802. But William's ancestry is unknown; there are many online trees
that assign parents to him, but there is no documentation to support
these claims.
There is a lot that we don't know about William
Jarrell. His year of birth is unknown; 1745-1750 is a popular
estimate, but there's no documentation to support this timeframe. A
1768 tax list for Rowan County NC shows a William Geril with a son
named Joseph who is more than 16 years old. But the son's name is
listed first, as if he is the householder and his father is a
dependent. We can't tell whether
this is our William, although we do believe that our William was living in Rowan
County at the time. If this is him, then presumably he was
born before 1730. There are other Gerils on the page, but we don't
know how they relate to each other and how many Williams might be
related to this group. There is no one named Parks on
the page, although William married Susannah about a year and a half
after the census date and must have gotten to know her somehow. Most of the Rowan tax lists
from this time period have not survived, so it's difficult to trace
a specific individual.
The surname that William used varied between Jarrell and Fitzgerald,
with various spellings. Middle names were uncommon in this
time period, and when William's children and grandchildren used a
middle initial of "F", it's likely that it stood for "Fitz".
This article attempts to present the family lines for the first two
generations (William and Susannah's children and grandchildren),
occasionally going further. The accuracy of the family tree is
constrained by the limited state of our current knowledge based
on both DNA and documentation.
The lines of descent are presented in chart form, and many dates are
approximate whether it says so or not.
This is a big family, so the charts use color coding to make it
easier to identify the family subgroups. This might seem obnoxious, but
a big wall of black-and-white font is worse. This tree is designed to support Jarrell
genealogists, not to present a complete picture of all Jarrells born
to this line; children who died young might not be presented since
they have no descendants.
Records are scanty, and it is not possible to fully identify all the
family relationships in the early generations of the William and
Susannah line. So some creativity is required to construct a family
tree.
Jarrell
DNA projects (an autosomal project on Gedmatch, and
Y-DNA and
mitochondrial DNA projects on FTDNA) have confirmed that certain
individuals descend from William and Susannah, but we can't always
be sure
whether they are William and Susannah's child or their grandchild.
The list is probably incomplete, since there may be children and grandchildren who existed but did not make
it into the record books. The
Jarrell Descendants Facebook page has more information on the
DNA projects and Jarrell genealogy in general, including Jarrell
families that are not related to William and Susannah. In
particular, there is a Jarrell family that traces back
to Daniel Jarrell of Virginia, but DNA results
indicate that this family is not related to the William and Susannah
line.
Joan Horsley has reports on this Jarrell family.

The
1830 census shows that
Ruel's household has one male age 20-30 (himself), one
female under 5 (Sally), one female
age 15-20 (probably his wife), and one female 60-70 (probably his
mother). In 1847 he signed a
permission slip for his daughter Sally to marry
William Conn, and signed a
marriage bond as well. The
1840 census shows three males 5-10 (Alexander,
Martin and ???), one male
10-15 (???), one male 30-40 (Ruel), one female 5-10
(Diana), one
female 10-15 (Sally), one female 40-50 (apparently Nancy,
although she may not be that old), and one
female 60-70 (Ruel's mother). The unidentified males
on the 1840 census are probably Nancy Jarrell's sons
from her first marriage. The
male age 10-14 is probably Jesse Conn, and the one age
5-10 is probably Ira Conn. Another son William Conn is
speculated but not proven to be Nancy's. The
1850 census shows two males in Ruel and Nancy's
household - Alexander born 1832 and Martin born
1835. They are too old to have come from Ruel and
Nancy's 1838 marriage. |

It seems possible that Ansel and Agga might
be the same person, although it's hard to reconcile
the records. Some sources say (without evidence) that Ansel's wife was named Agga (a variation of Agatha).
The
1877
death record for Ansel's daughter Nancy says
that her mother was Aggie Jarrell, which may or may
not be correct. There are no records of Ansel
Jarrell after 1823, and no records of Agga before
1830. There are few
records of Agga Jarrell, and they all indicate that
he was male. Is it possible that Ansel's widow
Aggie started living as a male after his death, and
the community accepted it? It seems unlikely,
but if it might not have seemed like a big deal if
they didn't have a zealot inciting them against it.
Ansel appears in the
1795
estate documents for his grandfather John Parks,
suggesting a birthdate of 1774 or earlier. The
1820 census indicates that
Ansel's wife was still
alive in 1820. Ansel's last appearance in the
records is when he received a land warrant on Peter
Creek (probably a misreading of Prater) on 5/3/1823, and it's assumed that he died
after this.
The Annals of Floyd County pg
201 says that as of November 1822, Ansel is exempt from doing road
work and paying county taxes in the future; they
don't give a reason, but maybe this was a hardship
exemption because he was already ill. An 1834
deed shows two Polly Jarrells; one of them is
expected to be William and Susannah's daughter, but
we can't tell whether the second one is a typo or if
there really were two people with that name. If
there were two Pollys, we can speculate that the
second one was Ansel's widow since the record for
Aggie might not be trustworthy. Another
possibility is that it's Carroll Jarrell's wife, who
was named Mary/Polly. There isn't a good
reason to include Carroll's wife on the deed, but
there was a good reason to include Ansel's widow
since his heirs were entitled to his share of the
land. However the deed also shows an Agga Senior and
Agga Junior. This whole document seems
confused and poorly transcribed, and we can
speculate that the clerk should have written Aggie
Jarrell (Ansel's widow) and Ansel Junior. But
that doesn't reconcile with the
1830 census
showing that Agga lived in an all-male
household. |

It's reported that Susannah had a daughter from this
relationship named Amanda, who was born 5 years

be documented apart from an
1850 census
report
indicating that her mother's name was Susan. This
same census shows Amanda's brother Andrew living in
the household. It
looks like Jesse Robinson may have had another wife who
was alive when Amanda was born, but this can not be
confirmed.
Amanda's maiden name is not well
documented. Her marriage record says it's Robinson.
The death certificate for her son Hezie Crum says
it's Jarrells. |

It's not clear whether this is the same Susannah. On
the
1860 census, Susannah and Reuben
Hicks are living in
the same household as Ruel Jarrell, his wife Nancy
Jarrell and Ruel's mother Sarah. Nancy and Susannah
are sisters, so it makes sense for them to live
in the same household. Reuben's age on the census is
34, but Susannah's age can be read as either 30 or
50. If this is the same Susannah, she would be about
50-55 years old, with a big age difference between
her and her husband. There are no known
children from this marriage. |

SPECULATIVE. Thomas is apparently a grandchild of
William and Susannah. His parentage can't be
documented but Mary is the prime suspect. His
marriage record indicates that
the court had to issue permission for the wedding to
proceed. I haven't located the original parental
permission slip, but
page 271 of the Annals of Floyd
County says "Bond dated 16, Jan. 1822 by Thomas Fitzgerrald & Abraham Beavers for a marriage shortly
to be had between Thomas Fitzgerrald & Susanna
Fitzgerrald. Sir, You will please to issue license
for Thomas Fitzgerral and Susanna Fitzgerral to
marry. Given under my hand this 16th January 1822.
(s) Ansel Fitzgerral (s) Mary Fitzgerral."
It's hard to identify anyone else that this Mary
Fitzgerral could be. There's room to speculate that
the wife of Agga or Ansel
was named Mary, but the father was always the
preferred signer and mom didn't get to sign unless
father wasn't there. Ansel's wife in particular doesn't work as an
alternative scenario for Thomas's parentage. Susannah was Ansel's daughter,
and he signed the permission slip for her to marry
Thomas. It's unlikely that the court would let Thomas marry his sister,
and if they did then Ansel could have signed for
both of them. Carroll's wife was named Mary, but
they didn't have a son named Thomas and none of
their children were old enough to get married in 1822.
The names of a Mary
and Thomas Jarrell who do not appear to be husband
and wife appear on an
1832 deed, leading to the
suspicion that they were mother and son. But
William and Susannah have many unidentified
grandchildren, so it's also possible that they were
brother and sister, perhaps the heirs of a deceased
child of William and Susannah. Alternatively,
we can't
rule out the possibility that this is Ansel's widow
and son. An 1834
deed shows two Polly Jarrells; one of them is
expected to be William and Susannah's daughter, but
we can't tell whether the second one is a typo or if
there really were multiple people with that name.
One of the Pollys is listed right below Carroll
Jarrell, who
did have a wife named Mary/Polly. But there's
not a good reason to include his wife on either of
these deeds, and in any case they did not have a son
named Thomas.
Thomas married his cousin
Susannah in 1822. It looks like maybe they separated and went on to
marry other people, in possibly bigamous
relationships. But it's also possible that there was
more than one Thomas, and Susannah was a widow when
she remarried. |

HIGHLY SPECULATIVE. There was a Hiram Jarrell who is
frequently attributed to Mary "Polly" Jarrell, but
there seems to be no documentation
linking him to her, and I don't know of any DNA
evidence. There doesn't seem to be
any justification for calling him Ambrose.
There was an Ambrose Jarrell whose name was recorded
on a deed with other family members in 1834, but
it's not clear who he was and there's no indication
that he's the same person as Hiram. The census
reports indicate that William and Susannah had
plenty of unidentified grandsons who could have been
over 21 in 1834. Hiram and Ambrose could easily be
two different people, and they could easily be the
sons of different Jarrell siblings. |

Mary "Polly" Jarrell potential
other children: the
1820 Floyd
County census shows her with 3 males under the
age of 10 and one female age 10-15 in her household.
One of the males is probably Ansel (born around 1819) and one
could
be Hiram if he's actually her son (born around 1811), but it's not clear who the other
kids are.
The
1830 census shows her with one male age
15-19 and one female age 5-9. The female is her daughter
Nellie but it's not clear who the male is; Ansel is
expected to be about 11 in 1830. There is
considerable variation in Ansel's reported age on
census reports, but he was probably born in
1819-1820 and probably could not have been born
earlier than 1817 (see explanation of James Pigg
below). |

James Pigg moved to Floyd County in the 1817-1819

census reports indicate that they had 14 children. They were still together on the 1860

down a family tradition that Pigg was Ansel's
father, and DNA evidence is indicating that it's true.
It is not clear whether Pigg is also Nellie's father,
but it seems likely. He is probably not the
father of any children that Mary Jarrell had before

Other potential children of Vashti Jarrell: only two
children can be
documented (Mary and Michael Junior, on the
1850 census). But the
1830 census shows several more: two males 10-15,
one male 20-30 (Michael apparently, but he should be
in the 30-40 column), three females under 5, three females
5-10, and one female 30-40 (Vashti). Mary Crum is
probably one of the three females under five, and
Michael Junior hadn't been born yet.
The
1840 census shows one male 5-10 (Michael Jr),
one male 15-20, one male 20-30, one male 40-50
(Michael, in the correct column this time), one
female under 5, one female 5-10, one female 10-15
(Mary), one female 20-30, and one female 40-50 (Vashti).
The one male and one female in the 20-30 range could
be an adult child and their spouse living with
Michael and Vashti; if so, the younger children
might belong to this couple.
There are a lot of undocumented claims about the
identity of these other children. The most noteworthy: William Crum 1824-aft
1900 who married Amanda Robinson (line of descent:
William/Susannah> Ansel Jarrell> Susannah Jarrell>
Amanda Robinson) is often claimed to be a son, but no documentation on
his parents can be found. If his birth year is
correct, he doesn't fit into the 1830 census, but he
could be the one male 15-20 on the 1840 census.
There is also a Sarah Crum 1830-aft 1910 who married
James Earls in Floyd County in 1846. The marriage
record says her father is Michael Crum, but her
mother is not listed and we can't be certain that
it's the same Michael. If she was born in 1830, she could be one of the three
females under five on the 1830 census, and the
one female 5-10 in 1840. |

Never married |
|
Jane Jarrell and William F. Jarrell (below)
may have been siblings or cousins. It's documented that
both claimed they were born in Virginia, at a time
when the rest of the family was still in North
Carolina. DNA evidence suggests that each was the
child of one of William/Susannah's daughters. Based
on age, the prime candidates to be their mother(s) were
Sarah, Susannah and/or Elizabeth; but none of these
are known to have lived in Virginia. Another
possibility is that William and Susannah had another
daughter that history has forgotten. Jane's father
is unknown. Jane never married, but that didn't
stop her from having five children.
DNA evidence indicates that the three boys each had
a different father, and the paternity of the two
girls can not be determined. |

Some sources think that Parks was a son of
William/Susannah and others think he was a grandson.
There's no proof either way, but based on his
birthdate it's more likely that he was a grandson.
In that case, DNA suggests that his Jarrell parent may have been
one of William and Susannah's sons, with Agga and
Ansel being the most likely candidates based on age. |
